Riftbound Free-for-All and 2v2
Three or four players to 8, or two teams to 11. Here are the rules with their rule numbers, and a board that keeps every player's score.
Every rule on this page comes from the Riftbound Core Rules and Tournament Rules dated 16 July 2026. The board is free: every seat gets its own corner, Legend art and score, and every game is saved.

Three or four players, first to 8.
The Core Rules name five sanctioned modes of play (CR 484). Two of them are free-for-all: everyone for themselves, no teams.
- FFA3 · Skirmish
- 3 players, 2 opponents each. Victory Score 8, 3 battlefields, Best of 1 (CR 487)
- FFA4 · War
- 4 players, 3 opponents each. Victory Score 8, 3 battlefields, Best of 1 (CR 488)
- 2v2 · Magma Chamber
- 4 players in 2 teams. Victory Score 11 for the team, 3 battlefields, Best of 1 (CR 489)
- 1v1
- 2 players, Victory Score 8, 2 battlefields, Bo1 Duel or Bo3 Match (CR 485, 486)
- How to win. At a cleanup, a player with at least the Victory Score and more points than any other player wins the game (CR 194.2). If two players are tied at or above it, play continues until one has more (CR 194.2.b). So reaching 8 is not a win on its own.
- Battlefields. Each player brings 3 in their deck, and 3 are in play (CR 487.4, 488.4). In a four player game the first player's battlefields are removed, which is why 4 players still give 3 battlefields (CR 488.4.b).
- The opening. The player going first does not draw in their first Draw Phase, and the player going last channels an extra Rune (CR 487.7, 488.7).
- The final point. A Conquer at one point below the Victory Score or higher only scores if you scored every battlefield that turn; otherwise you draw a card instead (CR 471.1.b). With 3 battlefields on the table, that is harder than in a duel. Hold, spells and abilities are not limited this way (CR 471.1.a.1).
- Casual only. Free-for-all does not appear in the Tournament Rules. It is a legal mode for casual play, with no organized play framework.
Two teams, one score each, to 11.
2v2 is the only sanctioned mode with a Victory Score other than 8, and the only multiplayer mode the Tournament Rules cover.
- The team wins together. First team to the Victory Score of 11 wins (CR 489.3, 489.6). One player's win wins it for the team, and one player's loss or concede loses it for the team (CR 489.6.a).
- Turn order alternates teams. The first player, then an opponent, then the first player's teammate, then the other opponent (CR 489.5.c). The first player skips their first draw and the last player channels an extra Rune (CR 489.7).
- Battlefields. 3 in play. The first player's battlefields are removed (CR 489.5.b).
- Helping your teammate. You may play spells during your teammate's turn, but only when they invite you using their priority (CR 489.8.a).
- Scoring a teammate's battlefield. A battlefield your teammate controlled during your Beginning Phase cannot be scored by your team that turn (CR 489.8.b).
- 2v2 tournaments. Players register as an A and B pair (TR 603). Events can be constructed, or sealed with a shared pool of 8 packs (TR 603.6), and the turn order is a fixed A, B, A, B (TR 603.7.a). 2v2 constructed bans everything constructed bans, plus the Legend Master Yi, Wuju Bladesman.
These rules are quoted from the Riftbound Core Rules and Tournament Rules, both dated 16 July 2026, on Riot's Rules Hub. If a newer version changes them, the Rules Hub wins. For the 1v1 numbers, see how many points to win and Bo3 matches.
A seat for every player at the table.
A dice works for two people. With four, somebody always loses track of somebody else's score. So the phone sits in the middle of the table and every player reads their own corner.
- Free-for-all for 3 or 4. Every seat has its own score and its own Legend art, and the board shows "First to 8" with the game timer.
- Seat it like your table. Players across from each other, or along the long edges of the phone when nobody sits at its ends.
- Who goes first. Pick the seat at setup, or let the app spin for it. The board marks that seat.
- Conquer, Hold or Ability. Tap a seat, then tap how the point was scored, so the record keeps who scored what, and how.
- 2v2. Your team on one half, theirs on the other, one score per team racing to 11. On the Duel board each half carries both teammates' Legends.
- After the game. The board you played on stays on screen, and you tap each seat to note the Legend it played and who sat there.

Every format keeps its own record.
A four player game is not a duel, and the numbers should not pretend it is. Free-for-all and 2v2 matches sit in the same history as your 1v1s, and keep their own records.
- Tagged in history. Each match card says 2v2, FFA3 or FFA4, and once you have played more than one format, a filter shows just one of them.
- Legends by format. The Legends page switches between 1v1, 2v2, FFA3 and FFA4. In 2v2 it lists the team pairs you played; in free-for-all it lists the Legends you faced.
- Duel numbers stay duel numbers. Going first and going second are counted from 1v1 games only, because in 2v2 "we went first" can mean your teammate did.
- Free, in every format. Free keeps your latest 10 matches in full detail and counts your stats over them. The full chronicle opens all of it.

Questions
What are the rules for Riftbound free-for-all?
Riftbound has two free-for-all modes in the Core Rules: FFA3 (Skirmish) for 3 players and FFA4 (War) for 4 players, with no teams (CR 487, 488). Both play to a Victory Score of 8, put 3 battlefields in play and are Best of 1. In FFA4 the first player's battlefields are removed. The first player skips their first draw and the last player channels an extra Rune (CR 487.7, 488.7). Riftbound Counter: Aethos has a board for both.
How many points do you need to win a Riftbound free-for-all?
8 points, in both 3 and 4 player free-for-all (CR 487.3, 488.3). A player wins at a cleanup when they have at least the Victory Score and more points than any other player (CR 194.2). Riftbound Counter: Aethos shows the Victory Score on the board as "First to 8".
What happens if two players reach 8 at the same time in free-for-all?
The one with more points wins. If they are tied at or above the Victory Score, play continues until one player has more points at a cleanup (CR 194.2.a, 194.2.b). Reaching 8 is not a win on its own in a multiplayer game.
What are the Riftbound 2v2 rules?
2v2 (Magma Chamber) is 4 players in 2 teams, Best of 1, with 3 battlefields in play and a Victory Score of 11 for the team (CR 489). Teammates win or lose together (CR 489.6.a). You may play spells during your teammate's turn only when they invite you with their priority (CR 489.8.a). Riftbound Counter: Aethos keeps a 2v2 score on the phone and on Apple Watch.
What is the turn order in Riftbound 2v2?
Turns alternate between teams: the first player, then an opponent, then the first player's teammate, then the other opponent (CR 489.5.c). In 2v2 tournaments the order is a fixed A, B, A, B (TR 603.7.a). The first player skips their first draw, and the last player channels an extra Rune (CR 489.7).
Are there Riftbound 2v2 tournaments?
Yes. The Tournament Rules cover 2v2 in TR 603: players register as an A and B pair, and an event can be constructed or sealed with a shared pool of 8 packs. 2v2 constructed also bans the Legend Master Yi, Wuju Bladesman. Free-for-all does not appear in the Tournament Rules, so it is a casual mode.
Can I keep score for free-for-all and 2v2 in Riftbound Counter: Aethos?
Yes. Riftbound Counter: Aethos has a three and a four player free-for-all board, where every player gets a seat with their Legend's art and their own score, and a 2v2 board with one score per team racing to 11. Both are free, with no ads and no account.
Can I track a Riftbound 2v2 game on Apple Watch?
Yes. The Riftbound Counter: Aethos watch app has a 2v2 format that sets Best of 1 and a Victory Score of 11. Tap a team's half and pick Conquer or Hold; the finished game is saved on the phone as a normal 2v2 match. Free-for-all is on the phone only.
Do free-for-all and 2v2 games count in my Legend stats?
They keep their own. In Riftbound Counter: Aethos the Legends page switches between 1v1, 2v2, FFA3 and FFA4, so a 2v2 or a four player game never mixes into your 1v1 Legend records. The 2v2 view lists the team pairs you played.
Most nights are still 1v1.
The same app keeps your duels and Bo3 matches point by point, logs tournament rounds, and holds your collection and decks.

Every seat, every point.
